Once you understand the relationship between different colours, you can control the effects they create when you combine them.

Harmonious schemes mix shades that lie fairly close on the colour wheel so that there are no jarring clashes, just gentle highlights introducing a hint of contrasting colour.

Contrasting schemes introduce colours from opposite sides of the wheel for a stronger, more dramatic effect in which complementary shades offset each others differences.
